I was living and working in Hong Kong, and was commissioned to design a denim showroom for the largest manufacturing agent in China. I'd spent more time in Hong Kong as an adult, than in the U.S.A., and it was my second home. When this company approached me about their project, my first question was "what is the budget"? They conversed in mandarin, and then one man said "no budget, make it beautiful".
I had a raw, commercial space to work with. I did everything from the lighting to sourcing reclaimed, antique brick and wood for the walls & flooring. I designed and had custom made, all the furniture, doors and shelving. I visited their denim wash facilities and designed and had made the clothing items we displayed throughout, to illustrate their manufacturing capabilities. The BEST vintage denim is found in Japan, so asked to be sent there to shop for antique indigo textiles and decorative pieces. I had full reign with local craftsmen, to create anything I imagined. I could not find the right items needed for some important finishes, so traveled to the U.S to have the door hardware and hooks custom made with Rocky Mountain Hardware, then hand carried back with me. It was an amazing commission to receive, and took seven months to complete.
The way a space makes those who enter, FEEL...shifts our reality and affects what we believe we can DO. Other showrooms for manufacturer's (which I had a good deal of time in over the years), were lit with flourescent lights and sterile. This space was warm and welcoming for visiting designers and buyers.
