This 1,100 square foot brick ranch home was built in 1971 and had remained untouched. Its situated on 160 acres of farmland on the outskirts of Cincinnati. A gut renovation was needed. We found a dutch door and had a local craftsman carve "peace to all who enter" at the top. We built window flower boxes, chose hickory floors and painted the exterior brick as well as around the wood stove. We had a mantle made at Hessel Stone, and built a vertical firewood holder for functionality. The kitchen cabinet layout was paramount. With a small home, every inch must be utilized. We added built-in cabinets by the wood stove, framed new inset shelving in the laundry room, a wall mounted boot & shoe holder by the back door (made from 1920's balloon molds), gave them a linen closet in the hallway and a walk-in closet for the master bedroom. The new door & window casings we built were painted to match the cabinets. The full bath received marble floors with a tile carpet design we created specifically for this home. We had new vanities made from 30 year old rough sawn oak boards (that were born from a tree that grew on the property). We chose an inset medicine cabinet for this small but luxurious zen-like bathroom and procured an old wood door that we repurposed as a full-length mirror. We found a hand carved salvaged sandstone sun behind the barn which became the inspiration and focal point of the entire room. Its the friction between old with new that creates the magic.
